Fundamental, interdisciplinary research on the representation of change (time,
dynamics, evolution), first within the framework of theoretical physics
(quantum mechanics, relativity theory, thermodynamics), then within the
framework of the cognitive and systems sciences (cybernetics, Artificial
Intelligence, cognitive psychology, self-organization theories, ...). This led
to the foundation of an adaptive metarepresentation, based on a
dynamics of distinctions. This is a conceptual framework for the
analysis and modelling of complex, self-organizing systems and their evolution.
It connects directly to Turchin's "Metasystem Transition Theory"
The framework is being implemented as a computer support system for
structuring complex problem domains, on the basis of adaptive hypermedia,
semantic networks, and knowledge structuring algorithms. It also forms a
starting point for a global evolutionary-systemic philosophy or world view,
which is being developed collaboratively in the "Principia Cybernetica
Project". Some of the implications of the theory have been empirically tested
by means of psychological and linguistic data.
