HAMMING DISTANCE

A measure of the difference between two messages, each consisting of a finite string of characterS, expressed by the number of characters that need to be changed to obtain one from the other. E.g., 0101 and 0110 has a Hamming distance of two whereas "Butter" and "ladder" are four characters apart (see error detecting code, error correcting code). (Krippendorff)
